Some argue that a coup in North Korea is not possible because of strict check and surveillance, party control, etc. Those factors certainly affect the level of difficulty for a coup but are not the root causes of a coup. Just ask yourself a simple question: is it possible to perpetuate a dictatorship by means of surveillance and control?
A coup, military or political, needs capable conspirators with will to power, inspiration to change the system or survival instinct given the circumstances. It generally happens in the time of severe social unrest, political turmoil and/or power vacuum. Those are the necessary conditions for a coup.
Suppose that there is no surveillance or control. Would it warrant a coup? Obviously not if the necessary conditions were not met. It would just make a coup much easier if the necessary conditions are met. Surveillance or control would not even work properly when the necessary conditions are met (or when a there is a total system breakdown from economic hardships). That is why any dictatorship eventually collapses.
Therefore, the aforementioned arguments misidentify causality. The likelihood of a coup is certainly to increase exponentially if the necessary conditions are met, and a coup becomes reality if there is a trigger event. No surveillance or control is able to stop it then.
The necessary conditions are not met right now in North Korea, which is why a coup is almost impossible at the moment.
