저는 대학생부터 창업을 생각했는데도 빨리 창업을 준비한다 생각했지만, 고등학생때부터도 김해인 강연자님께서는 창업을 준비하고 계셨다니 이미 너무 대단하신 거 같습니다! 많은 사람들이 자신의 정체성에 의문을 갖지만 그렇게 결단하고 뛰어드는 사람은 적은 것 같습니다. 확실히 완벽한 사람이란 없기에 모두가 같은 길을 나아가려고 하는때에 오히려 남들이 가지않는 길을 가는 것도 참 멋진거 같습니다. 저도 지금까지 아버지가 흡연하시는 걸 보기만 했지 적극적으로 아버지의 금연을 막으려고만 해봤지 제 자신을 지킬 무기를 만들 생각은 못했는데 그런 디퓨저를 만들 생각을 하시다니 너무 현명하신 거 같습니다! 사회문제를 보고, 사회를 위해서 기술을 쓰고자 하시는 마음이 너무 멋진거 같습니다. 본인이 전부 제작을 할 수 없다해도 본인만의 역할이 있는 것이겠죠. 사람들을 모이게 하는 힘이 있으신 게 아닌가 싶습니다. 한번 하고자 하는 마음이 있으시면, 행동력 자체가 너무 멋있는거 같습니다. 함께 하면 할 수 있다 라는 당연하게 보이지만 또 실제로 그 말처럼 해나가고 계신 해인님을 보며 많은 것을 깨닫게 된 거 같습니다. 저도 제 나름의 구상대로 사업을 기획하고 실제로 실행하면서 남들을 포용할 수 있는 포용력을 가지고 싶습니다! 🙌🏻

김해인 강연자님이 민족사관고등학교 2학년생이라는 것을 통해서 자신이 가지고 있는것의 잘파악하고 어떻게 공부해야 하는지 생각해 보았다는 것이 나이답지 않게 성숙한 모습을 보여주네요. 민사고에서 입법위원회에서 열심히 활동하면서 중학교에서 독립적이고 변화를 두려워하지 않았는데 고등학교에서 고지식하고 융통성을 가지고 있는 것으로 보였다는 것이 충격이었지만 새로운 사람으로 태어났다는 이야기가 좋네요. 김해인 강연자가 자신에게 부족한 부분을 친구들과 함께 하는 것이 많은 도움이 될것 같네요.^^~~~

Hello, I'm Kim Hae-in, a sophomore at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy.

When I was in middle school, I was the type of student who proudly graduated with Summa Cumme Laude. recognized by everyone. I thought that my biggest strength was ‘studying well’ and ‘being good at speaking’. But in KMLA, I had nothing special. Everyone studied well, and everyone spoke well.

I was very confused for a while. I knew that this day would come from the first day of school, but the first encounter was somewhat unbearable. I questioned myself a lot, “What’s unique about me?” But the answer didn’t drop by me for free. After studying at KMLA for almost a year, I realized, “I can’t do anything if I keep depressed.” I was still imperfect, but I decided to give it a try. I can learn while trying, right?

My first challenge was running for the student legislative council election, on which I had strong confidence and anticipation. Like the National Assembly, the Legislative Council is one of the student councils that enacts and revises school regulations and audits student autonomous budgets. I was so sure that I could give full play to my abilities, and thankfully, I got a chance. However, while discussing with council members, there were frequent disagreements. Of course, different opinions can clash during meetings, but the similar situation repeating made me feel I’m ruining the mood. In a student council community, I was “responsible and sensible to student’s difficulties,” but at the same time, “inflexible and a little too serious.”

Am I unnecessary in the community? I was just working hard, but the worries piled up. I frequently asked myself, “Who am I” and “What value do I have.”

Then, a little longer, I recalled the middle schooler Haein. First, I was an independent person who liked changes. Got bored of daily routine between school and academy, every day I went to school by different paths and tried different menus for dinner. I loved “new” things. I enjoyed traveling alone so I often went on a random bus trip to places I had in mind in my free time.

Among the “new” I liked, there was “science.” There was a huge convention hall near my academy. My parents might not have known about this, but when some interesting science and technology exhibitions were held, I visited there alone. At KMLA, I became interested in “public policy”, so I decided to join liberal arts. But still, my curiosity about science remained. Even joining the Scanning Electron Microscope club.

However, it was too late. I liked science, but I couldn’t keep up with my friends, who already studied years of curriculum before. You don’t want to do something you’re not good at, right? However, my passion for science wasn’t disappearing. Instead, I started to work closely with STEM friends, and the new journey began. A startup.

My father is a smoker. Even though my family has been telling him to quit smoking for over 10 years, nothing has changed. Always my father shifts the topic pledging that he’ll quit by the time he's 50, but you know, same repertoire every year. I was indifferent about his smoking for a while, but rethinking by now, I felt victimized. Putting my father's health aside, what about the third-hand smoke that our family suffers? Especially my mom, who has been affected longer than us.

It’s kind of late for our family, but what about worldwide smokers’ families, random passengers on the street, and acquaintances who took their cars? Here, I came up with ideas such as cell phone film, diffuser, and keyring that remove or prevent the absorption of harmful chemicals from smoking. And I’m currently working on inventing them with STEM crews. Providing a tool for nonsmokers to protect themselves was faster and more efficient than persuading smokers to quit smoking.

Also, I experienced a type of inventing in the Korea Youth Society of Neuroscience. When deep learning and AlphaGo were hot, I became interested in neuroscience and followed a close friend to join in. I didn’t have extensive knowledge. Still, it was amazing to cooperate with International Brain Bee winners and captains of neuroscience clubs. Here, I planned for ‘COVID Support Kit’ for the elderlies living alone, produced 150 of them, and delivered them to the local Senior Welfare Centers. The idea started from a discussion at the Seoul Citizens' Meeting. Delegates ranging all ages and opportunities shared their experiences and opinions regarding the socially disadvantaged and marginalized due to COVID. A story about an elderly became a cue for me to solve ‘Corona Blue’ – depression resulting from the fear and heavy social atmosphere of COVID. Therefore, I started the SNS relay illuminating elderlies’ struggles and produced a kit that includes a face mask, hand sanitizer, hand-written letters, colored pencils, and brain-stimulating worksheets. 300 members joined sewing masks and writing letters, and experts of neuroscience and chemistry produced hand sanitizers and worksheets.

Once, during a mentoring session, a startup CEO told me that “Your role as the only non-STEM member would be important.” When I first heard it, I honestly couldn’t understand right away. But now I know. My persistent problem raising, which would have been burdensome for some friends for a certain situation, could be the driving force to find social problems to be solved and to derive the necessity of our venture in the society. Although I wasn’t an expert at calculating formulas, setting hypotheses, and measuring results, I learned that when I combine my problem-solving mindset with the skills of my friends, we make an astonishing synergy.

Also, it was nice to be with people who are different from me. The older you get, the more time you spend with like-minded people who take similar classes. But communicating with various people, I felt the atmosphere was totally different. I felt like my brain circuit was burning out at every word of reply. I also felt like I was spending my time productively.

As I become a high school student, I realized that I’m the kind of person who has a strong sense of duty, a strong will to solve problems and a lot of interest in various fields. On the one hand, I have a strong opinion and am often too bit principled. For example, when I make an appointment with friends, I ask them as soon as I decide or remember. I didn’t consider whether it's a night or it’s a holiday. However, friends can definitely be annoyed, right? Considering this point, my friend gave a gentle announcement at the appropriate time. After then, if I need to notify members, I ask my friend to do. Instead, I remember important issues and keep telling him not to forget announcing. In addition, I sometimes regard situations too idealistically, getting blunt about the feasibility. Then my friends make a clear distinction between scientifically and technically ‘possible’ and ‘impossible.’ Even though I lack many things, but accomplishments were possible since we were together. And as we went through such big and small successes together, I felt myself becoming valuable in a community.

Founding a business and inventing have many similarities in that people excavate ideas necessary for society and turn them into concrete results. I started a business and acknowledged the role I could be good at, but there was something else even more remarkable. Before, I was an untamed girl who had a strong sense of responsibility but lacked flexibility. However, the startup experience taught me how to behave to make a greater synergy and how precious the people around me are. I’m ready to take on more challenges in the future and discover more diverse aspects and values of myself and that I have not yet discovered. And I want to be a person who can make up for the shortcomings of others with my strengths. Thank you for listening to my story.
